Henry paced the floor daily, a caged lion ready to spring. Every move he made came to me through George. Word of my return to Court reached his ears and the summons came the same day.
I dressed to perfection in a dark grey dress embroidered with intricate golden threads. The wide square neckline displayed my slender neck and smooth skin with risqué style and the black hood covering much of my hair blended artfully to appear as thick dark tresses rippling down my back. I wore the necklace Henry sent during my illness and it rested between my breasts in a glittering triumph of my return.
He watched me enter the room from afar. The air pulsated with a strange energy as the crowd silently edged away until I stood alone. Halfway to him I curtseyed in an elegant display of courtly obeisance but my eyes did not waver from the royal stare.
I stood up and waited, my lips curved into a half smile, teasing him into action.
âAnne,â he gasped. âYou are recovered.â
âI hope so, or I shall have words with you over the second rate doctor you sent.â I laughed gaily.
With a few great strides he reached me and gathered me into his arms. The courtiers stood like statues in a garden, staring with unconcealed astonishment.
Word of this was, without doubt, on its way to Katherine and I relished the moment and smiled broadly.
âAnne, forgive me. I sent the best man I could spare.â
âI forgive you,â I said, âon one condition.â
âAnything!â he roared.
âYou have arranged a banquet for the French ambassador tonight and I wish to attend.â
âAnne, you will not only attend the banquet but you will sit by my side and dance with me all night.â
âIf you wish, Majesty.â
My simple request had Henry acknowledge me as the leading lady at court and a partner to him in public.
A huge smile crossed his face. He had not taken his eyes from mine. He took my small hands into his large one.
âAre you pleased, Anne?â
âMy Lord, I am the most happy.â
